Day 3
Scripture: Romans 12:12 — “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
Clip: Jesus calls Matthew the tax collector
Reflection:
How do you remain “joyful in hope” when your “affliction” is a prison of your own making? Matthew was trapped by his choices, his wealth, and his status as a traitor. He had no right to hope for inclusion. Then Jesus walked up to his booth. Hope, for Matthew, wasn’t a feeling; it was a Person who crossed the line of “decency” to call him by name. The joy of hope is not that we are good, but that He is gracious.
Prayer:
Jesus, I am at my own “tax booth,” counting my compromises and failures. I feel disqualified by my past. Speak Your name into my affliction. Give me the startling, world-upending joy of being chosen, not because I am worthy, but because You are love. Grant me the patience to follow You away from my old self.
Practice:
When you feel anxious or restless today, pause and turn your heart to God in prayer.
From the Catechism (CCC):
“Christian hope … sustains us in trial, and contributes to the perseverance of the elect.” (CCC 1818)
From YOUCAT:
“Hope does not disappoint, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (YOUCAT 474)
